When it comes to high quality footwear for a really good price nothing could top Vagabond.
Simple lines with edgy details like thick soles and decorative stitching, you will surely find something to fit your style. All the products are made from scratch bit by bit under the supervision of Marie Nilsson Peterzen, creative director and co-founder.
And because she felt that customers deserve to know the whole story behind crafting shoes, she put together the first issue of The Shoesmakers Journal – This is what we stand for, our story and why we take such pride in our products.
1. What’s the story behind the Vagabond brand?
In the ’80s, Vagabond’s young entrepreneurs-to-be fell in love with the brand and were entrusted with its transformation. In the beginning the design office was located in Portugal and in Italy, close to the world’s best knowledge of shoemaking. In 1993 Vagabond moved back to Varberg, Sweden, to set up a full workshop for prototypes, most likely the only one of its kind in Nothern Europe
“After more than 20 years in the business, I can confidently say we have a genuine knowledge for making shoes. The process itself has always thrilled me; the mere challenge of it is perhaps what intrigues me the most,” says Marie Nilsson Peterzén, co-founder and creative director. “So many things need to fit together: the look, the lines, the comfort and wearability. Since we make every style from scratch, each design is a challenge. However, once I see the outsole and a last fitting together in harmony, it’s a fantastic feeling. Beside the love and craft you see in the final product, we also put great effort into making our production more sustainable. Consciousness about our fashion consumption is becoming widespread and while we’re proud of what we have accomplished so far, we are also humble towards the challenges ahead.”
2. Summer is full of colour and flowers prints. When it comes to shoes, which is the most predominant trend featured on catwalks?
Chunky soles have been popular styles for a while but now we look forward to looks ahead that include the pointy silhouette flat boots. It’s this season’s most significant style! The autumn collection is also including the high and mid height boots that come in a range of materials (such as stretch), which we saw as a trend for Spring ’16.
3. What’s your opinion on wearing boots in summer? We love them but some people think they are not appropriate.
We don´t like to talk about how to wear or not to wear. We offer a wide range of styles for our Vagabond consumer. Off course can you wear boots in the summer, style them with a summer dress or a pair of shorts.
4. Must have shoes for fall? Which is your favourite Vagabond pair from the FW collection?
For this autumn our main theme is “rebels,” an idea rooted in the punk and grunge of the ’80s and ’90s. The important colors are black and cognac, and there’s a touch of red as a flash color for this season.
5. Three tips for keeping your shoes clean and in a good shape for along period of time.
The routine of shoe care is divided into three steps: Clean, Preserve and Protect. The first step is always to clean the shoes. Second step is to refresh and nourish the shoes and the third step is to protect the shoes from dirt and moisture by impregnation. Remember that you need different tools and products for different materials.
