Who invented the bodycon dress

Short history of the sexiest dress of all time

The bodycon dress has been around for a long, long time. As time passed by, this dress has become a go to look for a night out or for a sophisticated party.

These dresses are best suited for women with an hourglass shape and toned figure. When wearing a bodycon dress keep accessories minimal and let the dress do the talking.

But let’s travel a little in time and see who invented the bodycon dress.

It is known that this dress gained its popularity in the 90’s when Herve Leger invented “the bender”, commonly called as a bandage dress, because of how it bends and molds the figure.

In the early 50’s were launched ultra-feminine collections in waist-cinching silhouettes. Often styled with costume jewelry, dramatic hats and gloves, the couture designers gave the trend a high-class look.

In 1960 the bodycon was taken to a new level of edgy futuristic fashion: was scandalously short, a little see-through and with metallic accents.

Yet, the one who had the idea of creating a dress like this is Azzedine Alaia, a Tunisian-born couturier and a shoe designer. In Paris, in 1986, Alaia had a collection where he exposed these dresses. He is often referred to as the father of the bodycon dress, being crowned in the ‘80s the King of Cling, for his form-fitting pieces. Alaia helped numerous women fit in his bodycon dresses.

Alaia’s designs took a futuristic approach, Léger went for a traditional bandage look, while Versace experimented with bold, bright patterns.

But there is another major designer who can be credited with contributing to the bodycon style – Paco Rabanne- who created his famous chainmail in a similar style – he updated the classy version of the bodycon dress.

Before that, the bodycon styles were similar to the ancient Egyptian Kalasiris – slim-fitting dresses worn by women of ancient Egypt. From 1930s to the 1970s, the bodycon emerged as an insignia of uber-glamorous fashion. And in that period everyone from fashion circles and many celebrities were spotted in bodycon dresses.
What’s clear is that there’s no definite date or an individual who invented the bodycon, but ever since the ‘20s, there have been different interpretations of it!
