How to dress for a winter escapade

Winter clothing tips for outdoor adventure travel

Traveling during winter can be sometimes difficult and choosing the perfect clothes for your activity type can make your adventure more comfortable. If you’re wondering why not staying at home in front of the fire with a hot chocolate in your hand, the answer is that the season provides unique opportunities to see landscapes and scenes with glistening snow and festive lights.

Plus, cold weather doesn’t mean you have to spend the next few months on the couch.

Here is the list with the essential items for an outdoor adventure:

  1. Clothing should be defined by 1 single word: layering.

base layer, middle layer, shell layer – as we presented in our previous articles these 3 layers are the key for an unforgettable experience. The right clothes will keep you warm and cozy during your adventure.

Additional layers will help maintain the heat you produce during your hike.

  1. Boots

Insulated winter boots are perfect for extreme conditions while waterproof boots are perfect for mild weather.

  1. Gloves

Mittens provide more warmth than gloves. The only difference is that gloves allow individual finger movement, which makes them more comfortable. If it’s extremely cold use an insulating glove inside a waterproof shell mitt to provide dexterity and warmth.

If you love taking pictures of the wilderness you can find gloves that will allow you to operate the camera. Some have fingertip covers that can be opened briefly to allow you to open the battery compartment doors, change memory cards or make some camera settings.

  1. Socks

Make sure that there is plenty of space in your boots to wiggle your toes around as this increases blood circulation and foot warmth. Because not all socks are created equal, find the ones that best meet your needs and personal preferences to minimize the stress on your feet.

Depending on the location and your activities, you may only need to bring along a lightweight jacket and a fleece sweater. To upgrade your protection go for a fleece lined or wind resistant jacket.

Just keep in mind that for extreme cold weather travel, your health shouldn’t be negotiable. Just find the pieces that suit your needs and locate the best possible price for them.
